We believe in serving our customers with unparalleled industry expertise alongside state-of-the-art technology. Our business is built on technology that makes our vast collection of news – as well as directory, legislative, and regulatory information – searchable, discoverable, and actionable.
With more than a decade of experience applying AI to government affairs data, we improve business workflows for our customers and develop new ways for them to make data-driven decisions while saving time and resources.
AI overview for Bloomberg Government
As a leader in the government affairs industry, Bloomberg Government continues to create smarter, more focused AI-enhanced applications that save time for our customers. This includes optimizing searches so that customers can find what they need when they need it, surfacing deep insights from analysis of millions of documents to reduce the time required to complete deep policy analysis, and serving up-to-the-minute news.
As there continues to be an exponential increase in news, in addition to legislative and regulatory information across all levels of governments, sophisticated AI techniques help us extract, summarize and deliver the most important insights from across all this content.
Our success in building AI-enhanced solutions is due to our dedication in four key areas:
- Expertise and accuracy
- Customer-centric approach
- Transparency you can trust
- Differentiated content
Expertise and accuracy
As an affiliate of Bloomberg L.P., we have access to deep professional experience in the field of AI. Bloomberg Industry Group utilizes hundreds of AI researchers and engineers who are constantly exploring state-of-the-art AI tools and technologies and determining how best to apply them to solve our customers’ most complex business problems.
In addition to building and deploying AI models in our solutions, these researchers and engineers also publish multiple research papers each year, putting us at the forefront of AI research and the deployment of AI solutions. As a result of this work, and with the emergence and proliferation of generative AI, we are uniquely positioned to understand both its power and limitations, so we can build in safeguards to foster accuracy in our AI models.
In fact, many of our engineers have supported Bloomberg Government for many years, developing deep domain expertise. Their understanding of the government affairs domain enables them to understand our customers’ problems and apply the appropriate technology to solve them.
Our approach to ensuring accuracy in our generative AI tools is thorough. We know generative AI can be inconsistent – hallucinations, inaccuracies, and lack of context are all things we work to avoid and correct in our generative AI offerings.
We use the industry-standard retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) framework, as well as our proprietary guardrail service that leverages our foundational technology, deep domain expertise, and content to ensure AI-generated responses are grounded in our content or primary source materials, not the internet at large.
We also have an extensive benchmarking process. We evaluate the accuracy of our generative AI at all phases – from development and early internal testing to the beta environment and customer testing, and onward throughout the life of the product. With these guardrails in place, we’re able to continuously tune and fix the model to prevent it from drifting over time or answers becoming less accurate.
Customer-centric approach
It’s in our DNA to be obsessed with providing our customers with cutting-edge technology built on a foundation of trusted news and analysis that makes them more efficient, more effective, and more knowledgeable about the issues that matter most.
When we build AI-powered tools, our primary focus is whether they will solve our customers’ most important challenges. We understand that adopting new technologies and new workflows can be disruptive, costly, and time consuming. Our mission is to reduce the friction and create a natural, incremental transition to using AI that delivers value to our customers.
Rather than developing technology that will upend their entire workflow or create their end work product, we have taken a building-block approach that focuses on addressing one specific problem at a time and seamlessly integrating into existing processes. Collectively, these efficiencies add up to a user-empowered workstream with a low barrier to entry.
We want our AI to make your job easier – not do it for you.
Through collaboration with our customers, we encourage direct feedback about how our AI solutions are working so that final solutions match their expectations and solve real problems.
As always, Bloomberg Government will continue to collaborate with our customers and empower them to drive the direction of our product development to best serve their needs.
Transparency you can trust
At Bloomberg Government, we believe that transparency is the key ingredient to building trust in our AI. We are committed to providing our customers with clear documentation on where and when our products employ generative AI and the sources used by our AI.
Differentiated content
Bloomberg Government’s cutting-edge AI technology is built on a foundation of comprehensive primary and secondary sources, award-winning unbiased news, and expert analysis.
This trove of authoritative content is constantly expanding, including our database of bills and regulations, detailed legislative and staffer directories, and cross-industry news coverage.
Our large language models are training on this specialized content, and every answer they provide is sourced from expert-vetted materials.
AI in our products
Bloomberg Government has been leveraging the power of AI for years to help government affairs professionals stay ahead of federal and state policy developments and influence policy.
With the recent breakthroughs in generative AI and ML brought to us by our team of technology and domain experts, even more is now possible with our solution.
We leverage AI, including machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval (IR), and recommendation systems to help process and organize the ever-increasing volume of information needed to work more quickly and efficiently.
Bloomberg Government uses AI in four broad areas: text comparison, extraction, summarization, and search.
Text comparison
Bloomberg Government customers can easily search similar text from state bills across the U.S. to see what policy is currently in progress, review details on past efforts, and identify key points to influence action or alignment from key legislators.
Results are presented in a single easy-to-skim table that is available for export. Allowing users to run an instant comparison search on semantically similar content saves hours of reading and searching through dense legislation across all 50 states.
Extraction
Machine learning and natural language processing algorithms are used to read various documents, including federal and state bills, and extract raw text from them. Extracting and normalizing such information with accuracy and low latency requires training, fine-tuning, and then optimizing for speed.
Summarization
To help speed up your consumption of legislative research, Bloomberg Government’s AI summarizes the most important information, enabling you to quickly understand key themes and points within a large volume of documents.
For example, Key Text quickly extracts the key points and essential components from lengthy legislative text, providing users with a summary of the critical details. This enables users to save time and focus on the most important aspects and key provisions of the bill without having to read the entire document.
Search
To help users more quickly find federal legislation, Bloomberg Government leverages a large language model to automatically select search filters based on keywords from a plain language query.
This is just the beginning, but we expect to continue to enhance our application to help customers maximize efficiency and uncover important, actionable insights. Our use of AI makes our content more discoverable, delivers answers and insights to our customers, and unlocks connections across millions of documents to lead users to useful information they might not have considered or found otherwise.
